Glossary
Cell identifiers, measurements and geographic coordinates.
General
These terms describe cell identifiers and observations used by OpenCellID.
Cell ID
An identifier for a cell within a mobile network. Use it with the country, network and area identifiers when making a cell lookup.
LAC — Location Area Code
Identifies a location area within a mobile network. LTE and NR use a Tracking Area Code (TAC). See the measurement fields for the identifiers used by each technology.
MCC — Mobile Country Code
Identifies the country associated with a mobile network. For example, 234 identifies the United Kingdom and 262 identifies Germany.
MNC — Mobile Network Code
Identifies a mobile network in combination with its MCC.
Measurement
An observation of a cell signal at a recorded geographic position. A measurement's coordinates describe where the observation was made, which may differ from the cell tower's position. Multiple observations help estimate a cell's location.
Latitude
The north–south coordinate of an observation or cell position, expressed in degrees.
Longitude
The east–west coordinate of an observation or cell position, expressed in degrees.
